American films in Czechoslovak film posters

American Center,Tržiště 13, Malá Strana, Prague (1. 2. 2009 - 31. 3. 2009) —

The American Center in Prague introduces a collection of original film posters for American films. The posters were created in Czechoslovakia between 1960 and 1989.

The American films released and distributed in socialist Czechoslovakia were strongly censored. Posters accompanying these films were created under the same strict control – their authors were not allowed to display the U.S. flag or other signs of capitalistic society. For example, when Josef Vyleťal was creating a poster for the film Easy Rider , he had to cover the US flag on Peter Fonda’s jacket with a cloud randomly passing by. Zdeněk Ziegler was called by the State Security Service to give an explanation where he got the 100 USD banknote which had appeared on his poster for the film 100 Rifles.
