Eva Galová – Vodrážková: Film Posters

Foyer of Bio Central Cinema (1. 4. 2019 - 30. 6. 2019) —

Eva Galová-Vodrážková
*28.4. 1940, Prague, a graphic and textile designer.
From 1966 to 1972, she was intensively working on film posters in the cooperation with the editorial staff of the Central Film Rental. When the normalization had begun, consequently, the staff was changed and Galová-Vodrážková quit the job. Since then, she engaged mostly in textile design (pendant textile collages).

The exhibition in the foyer of Bio Central cinema is representing 19 posters from her production (Terry’s Posters‘ collection does hold 43 in total). She belonged to only little number of women, who had broken through the glass ceiling of Czechoslovak Film Poster field (together with Olga Poláčková-Vyleťalová, Věra Nováková, Olga Fischerová, Eva Feiglová). Her posters, mainly those from the end of 60’s, were special with their exceptional colorfulness, unrestrained ornamentality and a sense of leeway, one could say, which was so typical for this particular time. On the poster for the American film Irma la Douce, is the hairstyle of the protagonist, Shirley MacLaine, almost drowned in a colorful, abstract bouquet, similary as in the case of another movie star Barbra Streisand, who got tangled in the colorful tones from Luis Armstrong’s trumpet on the poster for the Hollywood hit called Hello Dolly.

Eva Galová-Vodrážková accompanied with her works also Czechoslovak comedies, such as Watchman (Hlídač) and Private Torment with two legendary actors, Jiří Hrzán and Pavel Landovský, and also another unforgettable hit of the 60’s directed by Jiří Menzel, called Crime in the Cabaret (Zločin v šantánu), with stars like Eva Pilarová, Jiří Šlitr and Josef Suchý.

Galová also used her distinct author style on another poster for an American musical, Mary Poppins, German film Angel Baby (Engelchen – oder die Jungfrau von Bamberg) and a yugoslavian film of Dušan Makavejev, Love Affair, or The Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator.
