French New Wave in Czechoslovak and Polish Poster – 46. Summer Film School in Uherské Hradiště

Foyer Cinema Hvězda, Uherské Hradiště (24. 6. 2019 - 6. 8. 2019) —

An exhibition shows author and art posters for the films of French New Wave from the collection of Terry Posters (terryhoponozky.cz).

In Czechoslovakia and Poland were already from the 50’s designed author and art posters. The commissions for these posters were assigned by the monopole polish and czechoslovak distributors (Central Film Rental and Centrala Wynajmu filmów w Warszavie) and were realized by main artists of both countries. In comparison to the western countries and USA, the look of the posters was not dictated by the advertisement and commerce purposes, but the artistic value of the poster, which was also demanded by professional and art committees. Thus, the polish and czechoslovak film posters were so extraordinary in the worldwide publicity of the films.

The assemblage of displayed posters for French New Wave presents the cult films of this era (e.g. Pierre le fou, Hiroshima, mon amour, Breathless, Cléo from 5 to 7, The Ladies of Rochefort, Lovers and so on). Their designers are famed for their polish and czechoslovak poster works (Waldemar Swierzy, Franciszek Starowieyski, Wiktor Górka, Jiří Hilmar, Bedřich Dlouhý, Zdeněk Kaplan and others).
