IUS – The International Union of Students was founded at the First World Student Congress in August 1946 in Prague. It continued the work of the International Council of Students, created in London in 1941. The organization originally united students from all around the world, but during the Cold War some countries’ student unions stepped out and founded the International Student Conference in 1950. IUS strives for unity within student movements from all the world, protects specific interests and rights of students and actively participates in fight against colonialism and racism to bring peace and friendship between nations. IUS headquarters are located in Prague. Its main organ is the IUS Congress, which elects an Executive Secretariat. IUS monthly issues the World Students’ News in six languages. In 1984 it brought together 105 national student organizations from 102 countries of the world.
